the years fold away, concertina-style

like air between the bloated lungs of an accordion,

and the old tune plays on

tumbling down past my cochlea

the sound of waves

     the sound waves

waves within waves and

the old masters are watching.

listening.

this music was birthed in the belly of a whale.

we were married long before i grew old.

quasimodo breathes

Between the form and the rhythm and the flow, there's something absolutely magical about this. All the pieces just fit. Well done.

I think this is fantastic. I really do. That ending, and the beginning, and your title - all fantastic. I have to say, the "waves within waves... / ... listening" part felt weak compared to the rest of it, but the rest of it is fantastic, especially knowing about Quasimodo and - everything. Brilliant. So many stories in this. I especially adore how this can be about the sea or about bells/music at the same time.

This line, is just. Beautiful.
